Ok, so my mother was given an old lappy and I agreed to set it up for her. It’s old but used rarely. It’s Dell Insperon 1300.

I’ve been trying to set up her wifi but have come across an issue thats new to me.

Her existing network key/password is 8 characters long. When I type this in it tells me If you select WEP, the network key must be 5 ASCII or 10 hexadecimal characters for 64-bit encryption and 13 ASCII or 26 hexadecimal characters for 128-bit encryption.

It can’t put in a 5 or 10 character password as hers is 8. Never had this before and her PC accepts the password. Any ideas, is it the age of the lappy

Reset the router? That’s what I would try.

I have come across that problem before. change from wep to something else. If that doesnt work. reset the shit. unplug the router, press the reset button while you turn the power on again and keep holding for about 10 sec.

So I need to go to router settings maybe and change the security to WAP?

I tried going into router settings but it’s not admin/password anymore and I have no idea. I did the 192.168.1.1 thing but I don’t know the password.

Best bet like everyone said is to reset the router.

Here is most default username/passwords for most routers in case you don’t know it.

Right… What you need to do is update windows, make sure it has the latest servive pack on it, this affects Wifi more than you think.

2nd find the router make and model, type in google: and ask “default username and password” for that make and model (usually user: admin and Password: admin or just leave password blank, or leave the user name blank and type admin where the password goes)

IF this does not work than you need to reset the router, but make sure you know the adsl username and password, this can be obtained from the ISP (internet service provider) or your paprework, dead easy to do.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE WINDOWS TO THE LATEST SERVICE PACK… this will or should fix your problem, it is common on the Dell inspiron 1300

My wife has this computer from work. They’ve hamstrung the software so that you can’t update it. It will not connect wirelessly to anything unless you go back to the original wireless protocol which is effectively unsecured to anyone with an iota of knowledge. Its a pain in the arse and I hate it because she has a to have a 5m ethernet lead to do her work email.

TOD…

Yeh…I know.

Wouldnt hurt if someone else (other than me) reported it to Willy..

But..If i recall, if you clear your auto log-in and then log-in manually, it sorts itself out.
